An investigation is underway following the death of a 63-year-old employee at the Lancaster Leaf Tobacco Company in Lancaster City, Pennsylvania. The incident occurred on Wednesday (September 3) when Apolinar Mendez Heredia became trapped in a piece of machinery at the facility located on Pitney Road. Despite rescue efforts, Heredia was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Lancaster County Coroner’s office are leading the investigation into the incident. According to CBS21, OSHA has six months to complete its investigation. The cause and manner of Heredia's death have not yet been released, and an autopsy is scheduled.
The Lancaster Leaf Tobacco Company, a subsidiary of Universal Corporation, processes various types of tobacco, including wrapper, binder, and filler, supplying major cigar manufacturers in the United States. The company also operates facilities in several countries, including Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and Indonesia.
