Pennsylvania Courts Urge Safe Driving During School Year

As the new school year approaches, Pennsylvania courts are urging drivers to be cautious around school buses and in school zones. The reminder comes in light of the more than 16,000 citations issued for speeding in school zones since 2019, with the highest number of citations typically issued in September and October.

Pennsylvania law requires motorists to stop at least 10 feet away from school buses that have their red lights flashing and stop arm extended. This applies whether drivers are behind the bus, meeting the bus, or approaching an intersection where a bus is stopped.

To enhance student safety, some school districts, have installed cameras on school buses to detect the license plates of anyone passing illegally. The data is then sent to the police. The company that manufactures the cameras, BusPatrol, claims that 98% of violators do not repeat offenses.

The courts' reminder is part of a broader effort to ensure the safety of students as they return to school. Drivers are urged to stay alert, slow down in school zones, and stop for school buses to help protect students.
