Homeless shelters in Reading, Pennsylvania, are experiencing a significant increase in demand due to extreme cold weather. Opportunity House reports that its beds are nearly full, yet they continue to receive numerous calls and walk-ins from individuals seeking shelter. Hope Rescue Mission reached its capacity three weeks ago and is also struggling to accommodate the rising number of people in need.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for the area, with wind chills potentially dropping to 20 below zero. This harsh weather poses serious risks, including frostbite and hypothermia, which can occur quickly in such conditions.

Both shelters are urging the community to donate clothing, food, or money to help support those in need. Opportunity House, which has been serving the homeless since 1984, provides emergency shelter services for families, single men, women, and veterans. They also operate a thrift store and a Reuse and Recycle program to support their initiatives.

As the cold persists, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross advise residents to stay indoors and dress warmly if they must venture outside. They also caution against using supplemental heating sources indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
