Governor Josh Shapiro visited Lancaster on Wednesday (April 9) to emphasize the importance of the Main Street Matters program, which aims to revitalize downtown areas across Pennsylvania. The initiative has secured $20 million in funding for 81 projects, including over $1.2 million for Lancaster County, to enhance local economies and support small businesses.

During his visit, Governor Shapiro toured businesses along North Queen and King streets, such as BellaBoo, Ric’s Bread, and Foxduck. He also visited Place Marie Mall, a historic property undergoing renovations with a $100,000 façade improvement grant from the Main Street Matters program. This grant will help transform the building's upper floors into short-term rentals and office space.

Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace expressed gratitude for the governor's focus on main streets, describing them as the "core" of local economies. Representative Ismail Smith-Wade-El praised Shapiro's leadership, stating that it demonstrates a commitment to community investment.

The Main Street Matters initiative is part of the Shapiro Administration’s 10-year Economic Development Strategy, which aims to make Pennsylvania a leader in economic development and job creation. Governor Shapiro has committed to supporting small businesses and strengthening communities, especially as new federal tariffs pose challenges for local businesses.

The governor's visit to Lancaster underscores his administration's dedication to building vibrant communities and ensuring that every main street in Pennsylvania thrives.
