Reading Police Department is investigating an alleged use-of-force incident involving one of its officers. The incident occurred on Friday (May 9) on the 100 block of Douglass Street, where Officer Raymond Acevedo responded to a noise complaint. According to court documents, Acevedo confronted resident Juan Tavares-Valdez about loud music. When Tavares-Valdez refused to show his ID, Acevedo attempted to arrest him, leading to a physical altercation.

A video shared on social media appears to show Acevedo punching Tavares-Valdez in the face multiple times as he resisted arrest. Acevedo claims he used force because Tavares-Valdez was preventing him from handcuffing him. After being punched three times, Tavares-Valdez complied and was taken into custody. He was later charged with resisting arrest and a summary noise violation.

Reading Mayor Eddie Moran expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that the city takes the matter seriously. Moran announced that the Reading Police Department, through its Office of Professional Standards, is conducting a full investigation, which includes reviewing body camera footage and other relevant evidence.

The investigation aims to determine if the officer's actions were justified. Meanwhile, the community has been urged to remain patient as the investigation unfolds. The mayor emphasized the importance of accountability and respect in public service, stating that every resident deserves to be treated with dignity.
