Reading Mayor Eddie Moran announced on Friday (September 5) that Police Chief Elias Vazquez has resigned for personal reasons after serving less than two years in the position. Chief Vazquez, who was appointed in December 2023, played a crucial role in significantly reducing crime in Reading, Pennsylvania. Under his leadership, the city saw a 21% reduction in crime in 2024 and a further 32% reduction in the first quarter of 2025, with continued declines over the past six months, according to Berks Weekly.
Mayor Moran praised Vazquez for his dedication and strategic approach to community policing, which emphasized building partnerships and trust within the community. Vazquez, a New York native and Marine Corps veteran, brought over 36 years of law enforcement experience, having previously served with the Tampa Police Department and as chief of the Kenneth City Police Department in Florida.
During a press conference, Vazquez expressed gratitude to the community and the police department for their support, stating that the decision to step down was made in the best interest of his family. He highlighted the achievements of the department in reducing crime and fostering community engagement through initiatives like public roll calls and "park and walks."
Deputy Chief Javier Ruiz, the department's longest-serving officer, will take over as acting chief. Mayor Moran expressed confidence in Ruiz's ability to continue the progress made under Vazquez's leadership. Captain Aaron Denko has been promoted to Deputy Chief, filling the vacancy left by Ruiz. Mayor Moran stated that the leadership team will guide the city forward with professionalism and accountability.
