The sentencing of former President Donald Trump in a New York hush money case has been postponed until September 18. The decision came after Trump's lawyers requested more time to review the potential impact of a recent Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity.
Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. His legal team has asked Judge Juan Merchan to overturn the verdict, arguing that the Supreme Court's ruling could affect the case. The Supreme Court decision, issued on Monday, grants some immunity to presidents from prosecution related to their official acts.
The delay ensures that Trump will not be sentenced until after the Republican National Convention, which begins on July 15, where he is expected to accept the party's nomination for president. Judge Merchan is set to issue a ruling related to the immunity decision on September 6.
Manhattan prosecutors have stated they do not oppose the delay in sentencing. They believe Trump's arguments to be without merit but have agreed to his request for time to file a motion and adjourn sentencing pending the determination of his motion.
