Former New York City mayor and personal lawyer to ex-President Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, has been disbarred in New York for spreading false statements about the 2020 election. The Manhattan Appeals Court ruled that Giuliani's misconduct was severe, as he repeatedly lied in various forums to undermine the country's electoral system and destroy citizens' confidence in the government's legitimacy.
"The seriousness of respondent’s misconduct cannot be overstated," the appeals court wrote in its decision.
Giuliani's license in New York had been suspended in 2021, and he has faced criminal charges in both Arizona and Georgia for his role in trying to overturn the 2020 election results.
Ted Goodman, Giuliani's spokesperson, expressed disappointment at the decision and announced plans to appeal. He called on members of the legal community to speak out against what he termed a politically and ideologically corrupted decision by the New York Bar Association.
Giuliani's disbarment comes amid other legal troubles. He declared bankruptcy last year after being ordered to pay $148 million in damages to two former Georgia election workers over false accusations of election fraud. He is also facing criminal charges in Georgia and Arizona related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
