Funeral Held for Officer Killed in Hospital Shooting

The funeral for West York Police Officer Andrew Duarte, who was killed in a hospital shooting, is set for Friday (February 28) at Living Word Community Church in Red Lion, Pennsylvania. A procession of law enforcement officers will begin at 10:30 a.m. from Olewiler and Heffner Funeral Home on Cape Horn Road. The public is advised to avoid the area during this time due to expected traffic delays.

Officer Duarte, 30, was killed while responding to a hostage situation at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, last weekend. The attacker, Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, was also killed, and several others were wounded. The service for Duarte will be private, but it will be livestreamed for the public. Duarte was born in Oakland, California, and had served on the West York police force since 2022, after five years with the Denver Police Department.

Duarte was known for his work with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and received MADD's Hero Award in 2021 for his efforts in DUI prevention and enforcement. Rebecca Green, executive director for MADD Colorado/Wyoming, praised Duarte's dedication, saying, "He really believed in the power of law enforcement to save lives." Duarte's commitment to saving lives was evident in his actions during the hospital shooting.

The memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Lonnie Skiles, assisted by Pastor Aaron Anderson. The public can view the service via livestream on the Living Word Community Church's YouTube channel. Duarte is survived by his parents and his girlfriend.
