Riot at Berks Juvenile Facility Injures Officers

A riot erupted at Abraxas Academy, a juvenile detention facility in New Morgan Borough, Berks County, on Monday, September 1, causing significant damage and injuring several officers. Authorities reported that the incident began around 7:30 p.m. when inmates attempted to take control of the facility by assaulting guards. Responding agencies included the Robeson Township Police, Brecknock Township Police, Cumru Township Police, and the Pennsylvania State Police.

The riot led to extensive property damage, including broken windows, destroyed cameras, and ripped wiring. Inmates reportedly used glass shards as weapons, threatening to harm guards. Several staff members and officers sustained minor injuries, including cuts and lacerations. One officer is still recovering from a head injury.

According to WFMZ News, police identified several juveniles involved in the riot, including Ivan Mora, 18, and others identified by initials such as KBW, 15, and JMP, 17. These individuals face charges for property destruction, assaults, and threats against staff. The estimated cost of repairs to the facility is approximately $4,000. The investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending against the involved juveniles.

Authorities emphasize that all individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
