Physical therapy (PT) is a vital tool in maintaining mobility and preventing debilitating incidents among seniors, according to experts like Andrew Genova, a doctor of physical therapy in Maine. Dr. Genova emphasizes the importance of PT in preventing falls, which occur once every second among U.S. adults aged 65 and older. He notes that one million older adults are hospitalized annually due to falls.

Falls are a leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries for older adults, and the financial burden is significant. The cost of treating fall-related injuries is projected to rise from $50 billion to $70 billion annually this decade, as reported by Luna. Physical therapy not only aids in recovery but also serves as a preventive measure, reducing fall risks and healthcare costs.

According to Performance Health, falls result in over 3 million injuries treated in emergency departments each year, with about 800,000 leading to hospitalizations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights falls as a significant public health concern, emphasizing the need for prevention strategies.

Physical therapy can significantly reduce the risk of falls through balance and strength training. The Otago Exercise Program, a well-researched regimen, has shown a 35% reduction in falls among older adults. Moreover, a study by the Alliance for Physical Therapy Quality and Innovation found that Medicare patients who underwent PT after a fall were 50% less likely to need emergency room visits or hospital admissions within six months.

Dr. Genova advises that the best time to see a physical therapist is before you need one, echoing Benjamin Franklin's adage, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." By incorporating PT into their routine, seniors can maintain their independence and reduce the risk of life-threatening falls.
