A severe crash involving an 18-wheeler and a passenger vehicle occurred on Route 30 in York County, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, leading authorities to declare it a "mass casualty event." The accident, which happened shortly after 6 p.m., resulted in the closure of parts of Route 30 for several hours, including the ramps from Interstate 83 north and south to Route 30.
The term "mass casualty" is used when several people need to be evaluated for injuries, according to PennDOT spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler. The crash also caused a diesel oil leak, further complicating the situation. One person was reported to be trapped as a result of the collision.
The eastbound lanes of Route 30 were reopened around 8:51 p.m., and all lanes and associated ramps were cleared to reopen at around 9:14 p.m. according to Fox43.
The exact number of people injured in the crash has not been released, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
