Kutztown EMS May Have to Close

(Kutztown, PA) -- The Kutztown Area Transportation Service says it can't provide EMS service any longer unless it receives outside funding. KATS Chief Rodney Freeman says the service has survived mainly on reimbursement from insurance providers. He says the company loses money on 911 responses, with only a little profit coming from providing nonemergency medical and paratransit rides. He says if the business eliminates its emergency calls, those needing help in that part of Berks County would likely wait longer for ambulances to arrive from another agency.
