Blasting Begins Friday at Building Site for New STEM Facility

(Reading, PA) -- Residents in homes around the eight-hundred block of North Ninth Street may have a rude awakening Friday. Reading engineers with the school district say blasting will start on a job site there and continue for two weeks. They say crews will need to blast through limestone bedrock as they prepare the area for the district's new science, technology, engineering and math academy. Contractors will be using products to muffle the noise and a warning siren will sound before each shallow blast. The STEM facility is being built at a cost of 73-million dollars and is expected to be finished in three years.
