Flooding Increases In Berks County But Many Don't Have Insurance

(Reading, PA) -- Industry leaders say even though flooding is increasing in Berks County, many property owners don't have flood insurance. An ABC news analysis says about 26-thousand properties in the region have an 80-percent or higher chance of flooding in the next 30 years. Some of the property owners say they don't have flood insurance because they don't live in a federally designated flood zone. FEMA says most of the properties that will likely flood sit outside of the areas that have been deemed a high-enough risk to require flood insurance. FEMA also says the at-risk projections are based on past flood events, rather than future predictions that account for climate change.
