EPA Could Make Former Exide Battery Plant Area Superfund Site
(Reading, PA) - The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed adding the area around the former Exide battery plant site in Laureldale and Muhlenberg Township to the Superfund National Priorities List. That expansion would include Bernhart Park, where previous lead remediation efforts have been undertaken. The EPA says that the trace amounts of lead left in the soil after an earlier al Exide cleanup may pose a health risk to children. A final decision on making the area a Superfund site is expected in late February or early March
