>>Variance Given for Emotional Support Chickens, but Not Rooster

(Berks County, PA) -- The Zoning Board of Amity Township says a woman's emotional support chickens can stay, but a rooster has to go. Board members issued their ruling Monday that the chickens' pen will be granted a variance from lot size rules at the home of Megan Holden. She says her brother's emotional problems are soothed by the chickens, but neighbors had complained about the rooster's crowing and the smell. The variance includes stipulations that say the family can't compost their manure anymore and that the number of chickens must be reduced naturally over time to a five-bird limit.
