Commissioners Approve Restoring Youth Detention Center
(Reading, PA) -- Berks commissioners have approved an emergency declaration to restore and reopen a former youth detention center. The panel agreed with the Berks County District Attorney Tuesday night that the facility is needed again due to a rise in juvenile offenders and increasing severity of the crimes they commit. D-A John T. Adams says of the 47 homicide cases pending in the county, nine defendants are teenagers. The Youth Detention Center first opened in 1990 and closed 12 years ago.
