New Oxford native Thomas Haugh helped the Florida Gators clinch a thrilling 65-63 victory over Houston in the NCAA men's basketball championship on Monday (April 7). Haugh, a sophomore, contributed five points, five rebounds, and three assists to the Gators' win. Throughout the season, he averaged nearly ten points and six rebounds per game.
The game, held in San Antonio, Texas, was a nail-biter with 11 lead changes. Florida, trailing by 12 points at one stage, rallied to secure their third NCAA title and first since 2007. The Gators' defense was crucial in the final seconds, preventing Houston from attempting a game-winning shot. Walter Clayton Jr. played a pivotal role, scoring all 11 of his points in the second half and making a key defensive stop that sealed the victory.
Florida's Will Richard led the team with 18 points, while Alex Condon added 12. The Gators' coach, Todd Golden, became the youngest coach to win a national championship since 1983. He praised his team's resilience, saying, "We made plays when we needed them the most."
Houston's LJ Cryer led all scorers with 19 points, but the Cougars fell short in their bid for a first national title. The game was marked by intense physicality, with both teams showcasing strong defensive performances.
