Water service has been restored in Reading, Pennsylvania, following a significant water main break on Monday (May 5). The break occurred at the intersection of Lancaster Avenue and New Holland Road, affecting approximately 3,200 customers who experienced low or no water pressure. The Reading Area Water Authority (RAWA) crews worked diligently to repair the 16-inch main break, which also caused traffic disruptions in the area.
According to officials from the City of Reading, a boil water advisory has been issued for the affected customers. This advisory will remain in place for the next three days to ensure the safety of the water supply. Customers were notified of the advisory through RAWA's messaging system.
The main break led to early dismissal for students at Millmont Elementary School, as reported by WFMZ News. RAWA has advised residents and businesses to avoid the area while repairs continue.
RAWA has committed to providing updates as more information becomes available. The authority is also working with the Environmental Protection Agency's Get the Lead Out initiative to improve the city's water infrastructure, as noted on the Reading Area Water Authority's website.
