>Vehicle Restrictions Implemented Due To Winter Storm

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has implemented vehicle restrictions due to a winter storm affecting Berks County and other areas. As of Tuesday (December 2), Tier One restrictions are in effect on several highways, including Interstate 78 from the I-81 interchange in Lebanon County to the New Jersey state line. Under these restrictions, vehicles such as motorcycles, RVs, and buses are not permitted on the road. However, passenger vehicles and loaded commercial vehicles can travel, but must adhere to a reduced speed limit of 45 miles per hour.

The winter storm is expected to bring heavy, wet snow starting overnight Monday into Tuesday morning, with accumulations of up to six inches in some areas. Snowfall rates could reach up to one inch per hour in certain locations. According to PennDOT, the storm will impact both morning and afternoon commutes, and drivers are advised to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

Additional restrictions include a ban on empty tractor-trailers on I-78 eastbound between I-81 and the New Jersey line, as well as on other highways such as I-180 and PA 33. Commercial vehicles without chains or approved traction devices are also restricted on certain roadways. These measures aim to ensure safety and maintain open roads during the storm.

PennDOT advises motorists to check the latest road conditions through the 511PA website or app, which provides real-time traffic updates, weather forecasts, and access to traffic cameras. The restrictions will be lifted as soon as conditions are deemed safe.
